Health Marketing Conclave
Event Summary
The Health Marketing Conclave 2009 was organized in Mumbai as the first initiative from The Economic Times for the fast-growing health industry in India. In association with Brandscapes Worldwide, the conclave provided a platform for leaders in healthcare product and service providers, health marketing experts, and key government representatives to discuss opportunities and trends in health marketing in the light of the growing health consciousness among Indian consumers.
Dr. Bhaskar Das, Executive President, The Times of India Group, welcomed the delegates and speakers. Ms. Chandra Iyengar, Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, Government of Maharashtra delivered the keynote address and highlighted some of the government’s initiatives in the healthcare space, especially those for pregnant women. Pranesh Misra, Chairman and Managing Director, Brandscapes Worldwide, gave the vote of thanks.

| Mr. Peter Wennstrom, Founder and President, Healthy Marketing Team, moderated the first session that highlighted the various challenges in the health marketing space, which is still nascent in India. He was joined by Ms. Vinita Bali, Managing Director, Britannia Industries; Mr. Saugata Gupta, Chief Executive Officer – Consumer Products Business, Marico Industries; Mr. Vishal Bali, Chief Executive Officer, Wockhardt Hospitals; and Dr. Ajay Thakker, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Jupiter Hospital. |

| Mr. Muralidharan Nair, Partner – Health Sciences Advisory Practice, Ernst & Young moderated the next session on global best practices in health marketing. With a panel comprising Mr. Mikko Laavainen, Commercial Director – Ingredients Division, Raisio group; Mr. Shrijeet Mishra, Executive Director – Foods, Hindustan Unilever; Mr. Sudarshan Jain, Director – Healthcare Business, Nicholas Piramal; and Mr. A. Vaidheesh, Managing Director, Johnson and Johnson Medical India, the discussions focused on case studies from across the world and learnings for India, which has the largest disease burden in the world. |

| The third session focused on the effective ways to segment consumers for marketers to target brands at the right group. Mr. Pranesh Misra, Chairman and Managing Director, Brandscapes Worldwide moderated the session with Mr. Sam Waterfall, Senior Brand Strategist, Health Focus International; Dr. J. S. Pai, Executive Director, Protein Foods and Nutrition Development Association of India; and Ms. Rinita Singh, Managing director, Quantum Group as the panelists. |

| Besides the traditional 4 P’s of marketing, there are other ways to sharpen the marketing mix for health related brands. With Ms. Sukanya Kripalu, a strategic marketing consultant, moderating, the last session saw case studies and discussions around different strategies that help differentiate health brands from brands of other consumer goods and services. The panel included Mr. Neal Cavalier-Smith, Managing Director, Healthy Marketing Team; Mr. Tapan Ray, Director General, Organisation of Pharmaceuticals Producers of India; Mr. Kinjal Medh, Chief Operating Officer, Cogito Consulting; and Dr. Abhijit Desai, Cosmetic Dermatologist and Managing Director of Evolve Med Spa. |
